Joseph V. Miller, K.C.

In 1991, Joseph transitioned from a major Edmonton law firm to Weir Bowen, drawn by the opportunity to work with John Weir KC, a leading medical malpractice lawyer in Alberta. At Weir Bowen, Joe has developed a strong focus on Medical Malpractice with a particular emphasis on birth injury cases.Joe has committed his practice to advocating for children injured due to medical malpractice. With a wealth of experience, he has managed numerous complex cases involving brain injuries in children caused by oxygen deprivation during labour and delivery, hypoglycemia, infections, and premature birth. In 2016, he co-founded the Birth Injury Lawyers Alliance, the largest network of birth trauma lawyers in Canada, focused on representing children injured at birth or as newborns.The primary goal of obstetrical and neonatal litigation is to ensure that the injured child has sufficient funds now and into the future to access all recommended treatment and to ensure that when the child becomes an adult, he/she can live independently. His efforts have led to some of the largest injury settlements and trial awards in Alberta’s history for personal injury cases.Outside of the courtroom, Joe stays active by playing hockey and enjoys spending quality time with his family. He particularly cherishes moments with his two grandchildren to date, who bring a special joy to his life.Honours:In 2010 I was appointed a Queen’s Counsel by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The announcement by the Justice Minister noted that this designation recognises outstanding work and contributions in a lawyer’s public life.I am listed in three peer-reviewed directories.
